Best Pre-Wedding Photo Locations in Sydney

Sydney is one of the most photogenic cities in the world, making it an incredible backdrop for pre-wedding and engagement shoots. Whether you want iconic landmarks, hidden beaches or lush greenery, Sydney has it all.
Sydney Opera House & Circular Quay. Nothing says Sydney like the Opera House. The steps, the harbourside walkways and the views of the Harbour Bridge create a dramatic and world-recognisable setting. Shoot at golden hour — around 30 minutes before sunset — when the light turns warm and the crowds thin out.
Centennial Park. For couples who want something lush and romantic, Centennial Park is a favourite. Ancient Moreton Bay fig trees, rose gardens and open fields give you enormous variety in a single location. Spring is the best time for flowering blooms.
Manly Beach & North Head. If you want a beach session with dramatic clifftops, Manly is unbeatable. Sweeping ocean views and rugged natural scenery feel worlds away from the city — even though it is just a ferry ride from the CBD.
The Royal Botanic Garden. Right in the heart of Sydney, the Botanic Garden offers manicured lawns, harbour views and beautiful floral backdrops. It works equally well for elegant, editorial or relaxed couple sessions.
Blue Mountains. For adventurous couples willing to drive 90 minutes from Sydney, the Blue Mountains offer breathtaking clifftop lookouts and eucalyptus forests. Echo Point and Govetts Leap deliver truly extraordinary images.

Beyond the Opera House, Sydney has dozens of locations worth considering for pre-wedding and engagement shoots. Centennial Park is consistently one of the most popular — and for good reason. The ancient Moreton Bay figs create dramatic natural arches, the duck pond reflects light beautifully in the early morning, and the park's sheer size means you can find privacy even on busy weekends.
Manly Beach and the Shelly Beach headland offer something the city's harbourside locations cannot: raw coastal drama. The walk between Manly and Shelly Beach has cliffs, rock platforms, and sweeping ocean views. Shooting here at golden hour, with the Pacific light coming in low from the east in the morning or reflecting off the water in the late afternoon, produces some of the most cinematic images in Sydney.
Balmoral Beach is quieter and more elegant than Manly — a curved bay lined with Norfolk pines, with rotundas and a calm harbour instead of ocean waves. It suits couples who want a more refined coastal look. The suburb itself — tree-lined streets, heritage buildings, waterfront restaurants — also provides excellent backdrops for walking shots between locations.
The Blue Mountains, just 90 minutes from Sydney, offers a completely different palette: dramatic sandstone cliffs, dense eucalyptus bush, and the famous Three Sisters rock formation. Elopement-style shoots in the Blue Mountains have become increasingly popular, and for good reason — the scale of the landscape makes the images feel cinematic and timeless rather than location-specific.
A note on timing and access: most of Sydney's public spaces are available for photography without a permit, but some areas (including parts of the Royal Botanic Garden and the Sydney Harbour National Park) may require a permit for commercial photography sessions. I handle all permit arrangements for my clients so there are no surprises on the day.
For pre-wedding shoots, I recommend booking 3 to 6 months before your wedding date. This gives you plenty of time to get comfortable with how you photograph together, and you will have the images ready to use on your wedding website, your save-the-dates, or just to share with family.
