Family photography sessions in Sydney are one of my favourite things to shoot. There is something extraordinary about capturing a family together — the way parents look at their children, the way siblings make each other laugh, the small moments that pass so quickly. Here are the best Sydney locations for your next family session.

Centennial Park. Sydney's most beloved park is also one of its best photography locations. The wide open fields catch beautiful morning light, the ancient Moreton Bay fig trees create dramatic natural frames, and the duck ponds and rose gardens offer variety within a single location. Centennial Park works well for families with children of all ages.

Manly Beach and the Corso. For families who love the beach, Manly is hard to beat. The wide sandy beach is excellent for running, playing and candid moments. The beachside suburb also has beautiful side streets with flowering jacaranda trees that create stunning purple canopies in spring.

Parramatta Park. Often overlooked, Parramatta Park is a beautiful heritage-listed park with river frontage, open lawns and the historic Old Government House in the background. It is ideal for western Sydney families and significantly less crowded than inner-city alternatives.

Barangaroo Reserve. This relatively new harbourside park offers stunning views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and a beautifully landscaped natural environment. It works particularly well for families who want a clean, contemporary urban feel with natural elements.

Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. For families willing to travel a little further north of Sydney, Ku-ring-gai offers ancient Aboriginal rock engravings, bush tracks and stunning estuary views. It is a genuinely spectacular natural environment for adventurous family sessions.

Your own backyard or neighbourhood. Do not underestimate the power of familiar surroundings. Home sessions capture your family in the environment where you actually live — and the resulting photos feel deeply personal and authentic in a way that location shoots sometimes cannot.

Tips for a successful family session. Book for early morning (8 to 10am) when children are freshest and the light is soft. Keep sessions to 60 to 90 minutes maximum — beyond that, children tend to lose interest. Bring snacks. Let children run and play rather than trying to pose them — the best family photos are almost always candid.

Timing your family session in Sydney: the season and time of day matter enormously. Spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) offer the most reliable outdoor conditions — mild temperatures, lower humidity, and beautiful, warm-toned natural light. Summer sessions need to be booked either early morning (before 9am) or evening to avoid harsh midday light and heat that makes small children miserable. Winter light in Sydney is actually beautiful for photography — the sun stays lower in the sky all day, creating softer, more directional light even at midday.

What to bring to a family session in Sydney's parks: for sessions with young children, bring snacks, a change of clothes for the little ones (grass stains happen), and their favourite toy or comfort item for use during breaks. For beach sessions, bring a towel and let the children play at the water's edge — wet, sandy, happy children make for some of the most joyful family images you will ever have.

Managing young children during the session: I never ask children to sit still for long. Family sessions move at the pace of the children, not the photographer. My approach is to set up natural activities — walking together, parents swinging a toddler between them, siblings chasing each other — and photograph the real interactions. The forced 'everyone look at the camera' moment is the last thing we do, after everyone is comfortable and the real moments have already been captured.

Indoor options for rainy days: Sydney's unpredictable weather means having a plan B is essential. If you have a beautiful home, an indoor lifestyle session can be just as meaningful as an outdoor one — particularly for families with very young babies. The Blue Mountains, Inner West laneway areas, and covered spaces in Centennial Park all offer partial weather protection for outdoor sessions.

Including extended family: grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins can absolutely be included in family sessions. Let me know in advance so I can plan the flow and ensure everyone gets meaningful portrait time. Multi-generational images are some of the most meaningful family portraits — they capture relationships that will be treasured across generations.

How far in advance to book: for spring and autumn weekend sessions, I recommend booking 6 to 8 weeks in advance. Christmas and end-of-year sessions (November to December) fill up from as early as August. If you have a specific location or date in mind, earlier is always better.
