The first weeks of your baby's life are fleeting and precious beyond words. In-home newborn photography is one of the most meaningful investments new parents can make — and knowing what to expect makes the experience much more relaxed and enjoyable. Here is everything you need to know.

When to book. Newborns are typically photographed in the first two to three weeks of life, when they sleep deeply and curl naturally into beautiful poses. We recommend booking during pregnancy and confirming your session date once baby arrives. Flexibility is built in for early or late arrivals.

Why shoot at home? Your home is where your baby's story begins. In-home sessions capture your real environment — the nursery you prepared, the morning light through your bedroom window, the little details that make your space yours. These images feel authentic and deeply personal in a way that studio shoots often cannot replicate.

How to prepare your home. You don't need to have a perfectly styled home. Natural window light is the most important thing — a room with a large window facing north or east works beautifully. Clear a little space near the window for us to work. Keep the house comfortably warm, as babies sleep better when they are warm.

What happens during the session. Sessions typically last two to three hours, with no rush. We follow your baby's lead entirely — if they need to feed, we pause. If they need to settle, we wait. The goal is calm, happy baby and calm, happy parents. Most of the session involves soft natural poses, close-up detail shots (tiny hands and feet are always favourites) and family portraits with mum, dad and any siblings.

Older siblings. If you have older children, we encourage including them in part of the session. Some of the most treasured images are the very first meeting between a newborn and their big brother or sister.

What to wear. Keep it simple and comfortable. Neutral tones — cream, white, grey, soft blue — photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your baby. Avoid busy patterns and bright colours. Many parents choose to wear matching or coordinated tones.

Editing and delivery. Your finished gallery will be delivered within two to three weeks of your session. Images are professionally edited for skin tone, light and colour — ready to print and frame.

A note on safety: in any newborn session I lead, baby's safety and comfort is the non-negotiable priority. Poses are always supported and never forced. If a baby resists a position, we move on — no image is worth compromising a newborn's comfort or safety. I use natural and existing light wherever possible, avoiding flash which can disturb sleep. Every session moves at the baby's pace entirely.

Dealing with a fussy baby: every newborn session includes at least one period where the baby is unsettled, hungry, or simply not in the mood. This is completely normal and completely manageable. We take breaks for feeds, cuddles, nappy changes — whatever is needed. The best newborn photographers are patient and unhurried. If your session runs long because baby needed three feeds, that is absolutely fine. The session ends when we have what we need, not when the clock says so.

Including siblings: older siblings in newborn sessions are often the highlight of the whole gallery. The way a two-year-old looks at a new sibling, the tentative first touch, the mix of pride and bewilderment — these are images that families treasure for a lifetime. I always spend dedicated time with older siblings at the start of the session so they feel included and comfortable before introducing the baby.

What the finished gallery looks like: a typical newborn session produces 40 to 60 edited images. These include individual baby portraits, parent and baby images, sibling images, and family group shots. You will receive both close-up detail images (hands, feet, sleeping face) and wider lifestyle images that capture the environment. All images are colour-graded consistently and delivered via a private online gallery within three to four weeks.

Prints and albums: digital files are convenient but they get lost in hard drives and phone photo rolls. I strongly recommend ordering at least one printed product from your newborn session — a framed print, a small album, or a set of matted prints. These are the images families display for years and pass down. Printed products can be ordered directly through your gallery and are delivered to your door.

Booking process: enquire during your pregnancy (ideally second trimester) and I will hold a provisional date around your due date. Once your baby arrives and you know the exact birth date, we confirm your session for the first 5 to 14 days. Flexibility is built into the process — babies arrive on their own schedule.
