One of the most common questions I get from couples before their session is: what should we wear? Your outfits have a huge impact on how your photos look and feel. Here is a simple guide to help you get it right.
Coordinate, don't match. You don't need to wear identical colours. Instead, choose outfits that complement each other — similar tones or a shared colour palette. Warm earthy tones, soft neutrals or cool blues all work beautifully in Sydney's outdoor settings.
Avoid large logos and busy patterns. Bold graphics draw the eye away from your faces. Solid colours, subtle textures and simple patterns photograph much better. Linen, silk and cotton fabrics also move beautifully in the breeze.
Dress for the location. Beach sessions call for relaxed, natural outfits. City shoots near the Opera House or Circular Quay suit slightly more polished looks. I will always advise you based on where we are shooting.
Bring two outfits. Many couples bring a casual look and a more dressed-up option. This gives variety in your gallery and lets you show different sides of your relationship.
Ladies: flowing dresses photograph beautifully. Maxi dresses that catch the breeze create stunning movement, especially at beach locations. Off-the-shoulder and wrap styles also work extremely well.
Most importantly, wear something you feel confident in. The best photos come from couples who feel relaxed and like themselves. Reach out at sultancreative.com — I am always happy to help you plan.
Let's talk colours specifically, because Sydney's outdoor settings give you a lot to work with. If you are shooting at Centennial Park or in the bushland around Manly, earthy tones — olive, rust, tan, cream — blend beautifully with the natural surrounds. For harbour or beach sessions with that deep blue water backdrop, cooler neutrals work better: white, light grey, navy, stone. The Opera House and Circular Quay are neutral-friendly — almost anything works there as long as you avoid clashing patterns.
Fabrics matter more than most people realise. Linen, cotton and silk move naturally in the breeze, which adds life and dimension to outdoor images. Avoid synthetic fabrics that look flat and don't move. Avoid very stiff formal wear that makes you look uncomfortable. You want to look put-together, but the aim is to feel like yourself — relaxed and present.
Footwear is often the last thing people think about and sometimes the thing that ruins an outfit in photos. Heels look elegant on flat surfaces but can be impractical on grass or sand. If you are planning an outdoor shoot, bring both heels and a flat alternative. Sneakers can look great in a more casual session — just make sure they are clean and match the vibe of the rest of the outfit.
Hair and makeup: for women, I always recommend a professional blowout or styling on session day if it is in your budget. Camera-ready hair makes a significant difference in how confident you feel on camera. For men, a fresh haircut a few days before the shoot (not the day of — you want it to settle) makes a real difference. Keep makeup slightly more defined than everyday — camera lenses can soften features.
What NOT to wear: avoid anything with large text, busy prints, cartoon graphics, or high-visibility colours. These draw the eye away from your faces, which is where the story lives. Also avoid matching perfectly with your partner — it tends to look costume-y rather than coordinated. Think complementary, not identical.
Still not sure? Send me a photo of what you are planning to wear before your session and I will give you honest feedback. It takes two minutes and can make a huge difference to how your images turn out. Book your Sydney couples session at sultancreative.com.
