Little Bay Beach Maternity Photoshoot: A Sunrise Session in Sydney
We'd agreed on 6am. I got to Little Bay Beach at 5:40, expecting to spend twenty quiet minutes scouting angles in the dark before anyone showed up.
Instead I got the best twenty minutes of the whole shoot, and nobody was even there to see it.
The sunrise nobody warned me about
I've shot a lot of early mornings around Sydney, and most eastern beaches make you fight for first light. There's always a headland or a cliff in the way until the sun is already up and the soft part is over.
Little Bay isn't like that. I walked down onto the sand still half-asleep, and the sky over the water just started opening up — slow, then all at once — until the sun was coming straight up out of the ocean like it had nowhere else to be.
I'd been looking for a spot that did exactly that for a long time. Turns out it was twenty minutes from where I usually shoot.
There's a reason it works, and it's worth knowing if you're planning your own maternity photoshoot in Sydney: the bay faces east and sits in a hollow in the cliffs, with nothing between the sand and the horizon. No headland in the way, no buildings. At sunrise the light comes in low and almost horizontal across the water, and it lands on your face instead of behind your shoulder.
An empty beach, start to finish
By the time Žilvinas and Aurita arrived — expecting their first baby — the light was doing something I couldn't have planned for even if I'd tried. The kind of light that makes you stop giving directions and just start shooting.
And the beach was empty. Not "quiet because it's early" empty. Actually empty, the whole session. No one setting up a beach chair in the background. No dog walkers cutting through a frame mid-shot.
If you've ever tried a sunrise session at Bondi or Coogee and spent half the morning waiting for strangers to clear out of shot, that alone is a reason to drive the extra fifteen minutes south.
Simple, honest, unstyled
They wanted straightforward maternity photos. Nothing overly posed — just the two of them and the bump, walking, talking to each other more than to me.
That's usually when the real photos happen anyway. My job at that point is mostly to stay out of the way and keep the light behind me.
Soft white and cream outfits were the right call here. The background at Little Bay is pale sand and pale water at that hour, so anything heavily patterned or dark would have fought with it. (I go deeper on this in what to wear to a maternity photoshoot — the third post from this same session.)
Once the beach light lost its edge we walked north to the rocks, and the session changed completely — that's Part 2.
Planning your own Little Bay sunrise session
Get there in the dark. Twenty minutes before your call time, not five. The best light at Little Bay happens before the sun clears the horizon. Arrive at sunrise and you've missed it.
The stairs are the catch. The only way down to the sand is a long timber staircase. Allow five minutes down and closer to ten back up — and flag it if anyone's pregnant, in heels, or bringing a pram. Everything above the beach is still shootable if the stairs aren't workable.
Parking is easy, early. Street parking off Pine Avenue from Anzac Parade, free. At 5:40am you'll have your pick. Summer weekends around midday are the only time it gets competitive.
Permits. Personal photos need nothing. Professional shoots are on Randwick City Council land and go through their filming and still photography application — a fee, public liability cover, and several business days' notice. If you book with me, I handle it.
Best trimester. Around 30–34 weeks. The bump is clearly there and you're generally still comfortable enough for a walk on sand and a staircase.
Why Little Bay over Bondi or Coogee
Sunrise view — Little Bay: clean, straight off the ocean. Bondi and Coogee: often blocked by the headland.
Crowds at sunrise — Little Bay: usually nobody. Bondi and Coogee: runners, swimmers, dogs.
Backdrops in one session — Little Bay: sand, rocks, cliffs and rock pools. Bondi and Coogee: mostly sand and promenade.
Parking — Little Bay: free street parking, easy early. Bondi and Coogee: paid and competitive.
If you want the Sydney skyline in frame, Little Bay isn't it — see Best Pre-Wedding Photo Locations in Sydney for those. For everything else, it's the strongest coastal location in the eastern suburbs right now precisely because nobody's using it.
FAQ
What time is sunrise at Little Bay Beach?
Roughly 5:40am in midsummer, closer to 6:50am in midwinter. Be on the sand twenty minutes before whatever the time is — the soft light comes first.
Is Little Bay Beach good for a maternity photoshoot?
Yes. Calm sheltered water, an east-facing aspect for clean sunrise light, and four distinct backdrops within a five-minute walk. The only real consideration is the staircase down to the sand.
How long does a maternity session take?
Ninety minutes covers the beach and the rocks comfortably. Two hours if you want an outfit change.
Is Little Bay Beach crowded?
Barely, compared to Bondi or Coogee. At sunrise on a weekday we had the entire beach to ourselves for the full session.
What should I wear for a beach maternity photoshoot?
Soft, light, flowing fabric in cream, white or neutral tones. Full breakdown with photos in what to wear to a maternity photoshoot.
